| From Award-Winning Screenplay to the Stage Norman the Conqueror began as an award-winning screenplay by Deanna Dewey, winner of the Park Avenue Award at the 2012 New York Screenplay Contest. It has now been adapted for the stage and brought forward to 2026 by Wendy Reid, weaving Norman’s wartime childhood together with his life eighty years later and is based on real events. Southampton, 1940. Twelve-year-old Norman Harper expects evacuation to mean being sent to live with a family in the safety of the countryside. Instead, he finds himself behind the fences of an experimental camp, surrounded by boys, barbed wire, strict rules - and authority figures who expect to be obeyed. They haven’t reckoned on Norman. Quick-witted, mischievous and fiercely loyal, Norman isn’t afraid to ask awkward questions or stand up for his friends. And when he begins to challenge the way the camp is being run, one determined boy discovers just how much difference he can make. Eighty years later, Norman is 91. He may be older and slower, but he’s still stubborn, irreverent and driving his long-suffering wife Muriel to distraction.
